TAX ON PETROL
SOUTHERN CRITICISM.
Christchurch, January 14
At a meeting of the South Island (N.Z.) Motor Union the Otago Motor Club notified that it had opposed the proposal to levy a tax on petrol. It was pointed out that a petrol tax, in addition to one on tirwas a breach of all the agreements.
Mr J. W. Johnston said that the proposed tax would be unjust, inasmuch as if all petrol were taxed many users of petrol for other than motorin'? purposes would be unjustly penalised. If exemptions were made to avoid this the way would be left open for many’ frauds. Mr .1. S. Jtlawkes said, in reply to a (piestion, that he understood the Highways. Board had £300,000 it! hand. There was at present a siump in tire imports, following a boom, but a normal intlux should soon be struck. It was decided that the Minister should be approached on the lines of the Otago tilth's letter and asked to adhere to the tyre tax only, on the grounds that the petrol tax would constitute n breach of the agreement with motorists, and that the tyre tax was the most equitable system.
