TAIHAPE TRAGEDY
MURDERED MAN NATIVE OF AUCKLAND.
The Auckland Star says :—Gordon John Gemmell, the murdered man, was a native of Auckland, and was the youngest son of the late Captain Robert Gemmell, a former well-known sailing master in this port. He was a member of the Third Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Bi’igade and saw three and ahalf years’ active service on the western front in the war. He went through the whole campaign without being once invalided, and at the conclusion of hostilities held the rank of a quartermaster-sergeant. About three years ago he was married, his wife also being an Aueklander, aixd she is now left with an infant son of fourteen months. According to information supplied by relatives of the deceased man, he was employed some time ag<> by Moglian on his farm at Wainui, the two having first met at Wellington. Shortly before Chi’istmas Gemmell received an invitation to return to Moghan’s faun and take over his former place again, Moghau, it is stated, promising him a good time at Christmas if he went back.
