HELPING THE POLICE
RECOGNITION OF SERVICES.
Auckland, January 7,
“I trust this little ceremony will have the effect of drawing attention to the responsibility of your duties and the need for more support, on the pari, of the general public,” said the Hon. C. J. Pan 1 , Minister of Justice, when addressing the Auckland police last night on the occasion of the presentation of gold watches to Messrs Howarth, Davoren, and Dennis, in recognition of their bravery in assisting a constable in the arrest of a dangerous man at Mount Albert in. August last-. The watches were subscribed for by the police at Auckland, Waikato, Gisborne and Whaugarei. Superintendent Hendry said the men of the Auckland police division had initiated the movement to recognise in a, spontaneous and willing manner the way in which the three recipients bad come to the assistance of one of their comrades. The Minister said he was glad to be able to announce that the State had recognised the plucky action of the young men by a monetary reward, which, while not large, was a mark of the Government’s gratitude.
