DROWNING FATALITIES
A CAAIPER DROWNED.
Whakatane, January 7.
A sad drowning fatality occurred on Oliope Beach, eight miles from Whakatane. A party of campers wore bathing in the breakers when three or four of them got into difficulties owing to the undertow. Airs Arthur Hall and Richard Turpin were carried out of their depth. The other bathers went to tlmir assistance and eventually they were brought ashore in. an unconscious condition. Artificial respiration was resorted to and Turpin revived, but Airs Hall did not respond to the treatment. Dr Cronin pronounced life extinct, At the inquest, a verdict of accidental death was returned. YOUNG MAN DROWNED. A W AIR ARAB A FATALITY. Carterton, January 7. A drowning accident occurred on Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock in the Ruamaliunga river, when Norman James Emery Jones, aged 19, son of Air James Jones, of Carterton, lost his life. In company with Horace Barnett he entered the river where the depth was some 15 to 20 feet. He dived in and failing to reach the bank, sank without a struggle or call. The body was recovered on Sunday at 2 pan. An inquest was held this morning before the District Coroner, a verdict of death by accidental drowning being returned. Deceased was employed in Wellington and was attending University classes at night.
