AFTER CLOSELY CONTESTED

GAMES

The Manawatu Centre’s New Year tournament was brought to a successful conclusion on Thursday afternoon. The semi-finals were played in the morning when Needham (Palmerston N.) defeated Crump (Palmerston N.) and Corbridge (Manawatu) gained the victory over Ramsay (Palmerston N.). The two successful teams met in the afternoon in the final and after about three hours’ play, Needham’s rink earned off the honours, winning by the narrow margin of two points, the scores being 16 to 14. The weather was fine and the greens were keen. At the conclusion of the toumarnent. the president, of the Manawatu Centre, Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., congratulated the winners on their well- deserved victory, and the good game they had played. The game, he said, was very interesting to watch, and the runners-up had put up a. remarkable performance particularly as it was Mr Corhridge’s first year as slap. The winning team, he mentioned, was going to represent Palmerston N. at the annual tournament at. Christchurch next week, and he wished them every success when they visited the south. He also congratulated Air Jones’ team, which competed in the runners-up. lie hoped that some arrangement would be arrived at with the Wan-

ganui and Taranaki Centres in regard to future tournaments. If “j some suitable agreement could be arrived at between the centres he thought that it would be for the betterment of bowling along this, coast. He then handed over to the winners the trophies they had won and informed the runners-up that they would receive certificates for their part, in the tourney. He then called for cheers for the winners, runners-up, Mr Jones and his rink, the ladies, who had attended to the catering, and especially Airs Wim--.ett, and Air Wimsett, the energetic secretary of the centre. Messrs Needham, Corbridge and Jones then suitably replied.
