TRAP ACCIDENT.

CHILD DEAD: MOTHER IN CRITICAL CONDITION.
An accident occurred at 11.30 a.m, on Wednesday on I he Turakina Valley road. Air Richard J. Hammond. farm manager in the Volley, was driving a horse and cart, in company with his wife find two little girls of six years ami 15 months, The horse look frigid and shied a* a mob of sheep, appearing nl a bend in the road. Hammond threw his six \ear-old child on to the road and jumped out himself, the horse in the meantime backing over the hank and hurling Airs Hammond and tier baby into the Turakina river, a fall of 60 feet. Hammond immediately dived into the water and rescued his wife, who was ffoating face downwards. He afterwards dived for the baby and brought her to the bank, but she died at the -hospital at Huntcrville at 5 o’clock in the evening. An inquest held on Thursday showed that death was caused through laceration of the brain. Mrs Hammond was removed to a Marton hospital yesterday, and is still in a very critical condition.
