Pleasure-seekers were attracted In hundreds to the local beach on' Now Years's Day, when a gala day was held under the auspices iif the Bench Committee. The fixture attracted a large number of Palmerston North district and local residents. The weather was line hut the high wind which swept across the sand marred the day's outing to a certain extent. An energetic committee, with Mr C. 11. Whitehead as chairman, had all arrangements for the sports completely in hand and everything went without a hitch. Tlie various running and jumping events attracted good entries and in many eases exciting finishes resulted. During the course of the day bathing was indulged in, and those who spent tlie outing at the seaside thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
