MAN RUNS AMOK.
T IKES CHARGE OF TELEPHONE EXCHANGE. REMOVED TO ASYLUM. Ashburton, Last Night. A man aged 29 years ran amok at Cherfsey yesterday. He began by rushing through a hotel, continuing to the railway station, knocking several clerks off their stools and entered the telephone exchange, where he took charge by bolting the door. Telephone- communication was stopped for an hour and a-half during which time the Ashburton police were informed from Rakaia. Two constables hastened out, smashed in the exchange door and grappled with the wild man whom after a while they overpowered and brought to Ashburton. A constable this morning who took food and washing material to his cell was attacked by the man who displayed great strength. A sergeant came to his assistance and the°man was overpowered and suhsecpiently removed to an asylum.
