DIVERTING TRAFFIC THROUGH MAIN STREET.
DEPUTATION WAITS ON COUNCIL. A deputation consisting of representatives of the Retailers’ Association and Chamber of Commerce waited upon the Borough Council on Monday night with a request that the Council improve Ihe road at tin: north entrance to the town, running parallel with the railway line and leading into Park St. and thence through the main thoroughfare. Mr Christie (president of the Retailers'Association) said that. at. present traffic from the north proceeded along Russell and Johnston Sts., to the exclusion of the main thoroughfare. The business portion of the town was thus not seen by visitors. If the Council tar-saeled the road in question for a few chains, motorists would naturally follow the good road and tills would lead them into the business portion of the town and visitors passing through would be afforded au opportunity of seeing the business portion of Foxton and would get a better impression of the town. Mi 1 Homblow said that both Palmerston N. and Levin business bouses benefitted by the main traffic passing through the business centre. The Foxton business centre was side-tracked as the main road traversed the back street. If the road was improved as suggested, the traffic would probably be diverted through the town to the advantage of the business people. Messrs l’erreau, McMurray and Admore endorsed the previous speakers’ remarks. The Mayor said that the schedule of work laid down would exceed the expenditure for this year. Footpaths had yet to be provided and other maintenance work carried out. After the deputation withdrew the following motion, moved by the Mayor and seconded by Cr. Bryant was carried. — “That the road foreman be asked to prepare an estimate of cost of tar sealing about 200 yards of Park St. north about 100 yards north and south of the intersection of Park and Russell Sts., and about three chains from Johnston St. towards Main St. along Union St.”
