AFFORESTATION AND SAND DUNE RECLAMATION.

COMMISSIONER VISITS OROUA DOWNES.

The planting aiul reclamation work that is being carried out by the State Forestry Department at Oroua Downs was visited yesterday by the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, Commissioner of State Forests, who is just completing a tour of the various reserves in the Dominion. On the visit the Commissioner was accompanied by Captain Mclntosh Ellis, Director of State Forests, Mr G. F. Dixon, secretary to Sir Iloaton, Mr S. A. Darby, officer in charge of the Wellington Forest Region, and Mr J. Linklater, M.P. Leaving Palmerston N. about 10 a.m., the party was joined en route by Mr K. Dalrymple, and on arrival at the dunes, were conducted over the work by the officer in charge, Mr Reed, who has recently taken oVer the control. After the inspection the visitors were entertained at lunch at the cook-house, and a number of short speeches were made. The plantations on the Foxton Road were also visited, and the Commissioner was conducted over the sandy areas in the vicinity of the Manawalu I fends, as well as shown the Foxton Harbour. To-day the Minister returned to Wellington.
