Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1923. SEASIDE RESORT FOR LEVIN.

A PROPOSAL In. establish a sonside resort for Levin tins been discussed in that, centre For some time and the “Chronicle" has given the proposal a good deal of publicity. After all, Levin is not far distant from the shores of the ocean —only a few miles as the crow flies, hut access to the beach is the obstacle. There is a splendid site for a seaside resort a few miles to (lie west of Pouroutawhao, which would provide the Levin district with the advantages enjoyed by other centres adjacent to the sea. In order to assist the movement, the ITon. Edward Newman has ottered to dedicate a road line for about two miles through his properly to within 25 chains of the sea. This splendid offer should be taken up seriously, and without, delay for should the property pass out of Mr Newman’s hands the opportunity may pass. The Levin Chamber of Commerce is taking up the subject with characteristic enthusiasm and it is hoped their efforts will be crowned with success. A seaside resort for Levin would add to the prosperity and attractiveness of our sister town. The “Chronicle,” in dealing with the subject says: “That the beach could lie made a popular and very attractive one. is beyond question. The beach itself is a perfect one with, at low tide, 150 yards of clean, firm sand to the water’s edge; there is no drifting sand in the vicinity and the site for a township could be obtained if desired on a well-grassed flat of sand formation, several hundred acres in extent, within 20 chains of the sea. An alternative suggestion for a township site would be found within a chain of the seafront and immediately behind the excellent fore-dune which protects the whole of this particular part of the coast. In this case, it would be necessary to undertake the levelling off by the direct action of the wind —-an operation well understood by those engaged in the reclamation of sand hills for tree-planting—of the small partly-bound, sugar-loaf hillocks which form the sand area here. Once this was done and the levelled area “fixed” with suitable binding grasses, no further trouble would be erperienced, as the foredune would prevent any further encroachment of sand.”
