MISTAKEN IDENTIFICATION
“DEAD” MAN COMES TO LTFE. Christchurch, Last Night. Mrs E. A. Shaw, who lives at 13-1 St. Asaph St., identified the body of I lie mail found dead in a vacant section in Hereford St. last 'Monday as that, of TT. Hayes, a shearer, who had been missing from her borne for about n month. An inquest was held and her identification was confirmed by a young student, who was also living in apartments which Mrs Shaw let.
The Coroner, however, said identification had not boon clearly established and accordingly adjourned the inquest sine die. The matter seemed to be ended, hut. yesterday Mrs Shaw was almost paralysed with fright when she saw the man she had identified as dead walking in through the front gate. The, real Mr TT. Haves bad come to gather bis belongings before going onl into the country for the season’s shearing. When Mrs Shaw bad recovered herself, she explained to the surprised Mr Hayes what had happened, and he immediately went around to the police station, and reported that he was not the dead man. Tiie inquest oil the body was resumed this afternoon. The Coroner said the description of the man who bad died tallied closely witli that of Henry Hayes, and so it was not. remarkable that Mrs Shaw had been mistaken. The inquest was agnin adjourned sine die.
