Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1923 PLANS FOR PUBLIC LIBRARY.
THE Mayor in answer to a question at the last. Counoil meeting, said il was not necessary lo submit plans for the proposed public library building to a. public meeting. Why? He went to considerable trouble lo have plans prepared for the baths In be presented to (be public meeting of ratepayers, and even had the engineer present. Why such indifference in connection with the public library proposal? Surely il is time the Mayor realised that lie is not the only person in the community possessed of mentality. There is such a thing as public opinion and his duty is to carry out the wishes of the public rather than obstruct everything which, does not emanate from his brain or meet with his approval. The days of autocracy have long sinee«pusscd and he cannot shut his eyes to the fad that the public are determined to push Foxton into (lie vail of progress and are prepared to pay for public assels which will make our home town attractive even if it does hit the pockets of a few who are well able to bear a title extra in rates for the public good.
