MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Manawatu County • Council met on Tuesday, Sir James Wilson presiding. Others present were: Crs. J. McKelvie, H. J. Fagan, W. S. Penny, H. H. Hunt, J. Boyce and W. E. Barber. The attention of the Council was drawn to the fact that it had not carried out repairs to certain bridges, which the Engineer’s office of the New Zealand Railways had reported on 12 months ago. The council was requested to give the matter immediate attention. —Received. Awahou Riding.—-Nothing of much importance had been done in this riding during the last month, beyond carting metal and filling in pot holes and patching up weak places on the various roads. Kawa Kawn, Carnarvon and Rongotea.—A fair quantity of clay had been supplied between the above ridings and spread along the Foxton road where most urgently needed for binding loose metal for a distance of four or five miles. A quantity of clay was now being delivered on the Palmerston N.-Fox-ton road for the same purpose. GENERAL. It was decided on the motion of Cr. Fagan seconded by Cr. Boyce, to purchase two velocipedes for the tramway service at a cost of £22 each. On the motion of Cr. Fagan, seconded by Cr. McKelvie, it was resolved that a motor firm be allowed permission to erect motor signboards under the direction of the engineer, and that same be allowed to remain erected during the council’s pleasure. The Kiwitea County Council wi’ote with reference to the conference of county councils held at Podding recently to consider the proposal of the Main Highways Council to include the counties of Hntt and Mnlcara in the Wellington West Highways District, No. 9, and enclosing copy of a letter received from Mr Godfrey, executive member of the board, dealing with the resolutions passed at the conference. The latter stated that as the Hutt and Makara counties could not conveniently be associated with any other group, and as their interests were considered lo lie quite as much with the western group as with the eastern and further, as these two counties were themselves satisfied to be grouped ill the Wellington West District, the board decided to constitute the district as originally proposed. However, should it at any future date be found desirable that the group boundaries should be amended, the board would give the matter its' careful consideration. Relative to the matter of compensation for those counties which, prior to the passing of the Main Highways Act, had brought their main load construction up to main highways standard, the difficulties in the way of giving effect to such a provision and particularly as the compensation would constitute such a heavy drain on the funds at the disposal of the board, the proposal could not be entertained. The object of the Main Highways Act was to provide the means of constructing roads already constructed. ceived.
