THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

OCTOBER GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for the month of October, for hemp, tow and stripper slips, has been issued by the'Department of Agriculture as follows: — Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was 5,018, as compared with 5,141 bales for the corresponding month of last year, a decrease of 123 bales. For the twelve months ending 31st October, 1923, the number of bales graded was 62,509, as compared with G 3,784 for the previous twelve months,, a decrease of 1,275 bales. Tow. —During the month, 1,354 bales of tow were graded as compared with 1,301 for the same month last year, an increase of 53 bales. For the twelve months ending 31st October, 1923, the number of bales graded was 14,357, as compared with 15,304 for the previous twelve mouths, a decrease of 947 hales. Shipper Tow. —During the month 1-10 bales were graded as against nil in 1922. Stripper Slip-.—During the month 1-1 hales of shipper slips were graded as compared with 21 bales for the corresponding month last year, a decrease of 7 bales. For the twelve months ending 31st October, 1923, the number of bales graded was 121 as compared with 133 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 12 bales. The following is the detailed particulars of the hemp graded:— Good High Low

Fox imi and 41 at Wellington were rejected. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: Good fair 825 (1,071), high fair 2,650 (2,974), low fair 1,412 (911), Common 52 (132), rejected 79 (53), a total of 5,018 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 876, Foxton 1,483, Wellington 1,925, Blenheim 151, Bluff 355, Wairoa 228. The following is the detailed parlmiliars of the tow graded:—

Eleven" bales at Wellington were condemned. The number of bales in each grade was as follows, thie number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— Ist grade 484 (761), 2nd grade 780 (521), 3rd grade 69 (10), condemned 11 (9), a total of bales, being an increase of SSI bales. The number of bales graded bt eaph port was as follows :-A|ipkland 163, Foxton 376, Wellington 473, Blenheim 43, Bluff 237, Wairoa 52, Waikuku 120. Stripper Tow. —Forty-eight bales at Wellington were and 86 _ bales at Foxton and six at Wellington were graded 2nd grade.
