BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY
QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of'mem-. '• bers of the above was held, on Thursday night, presided over by Mr M. E. Perreau (president). There -- Iwas a fair attendance and several apologies for absence were received. EASTON PARK. Correspondence was received from the Borough Council with a request that a picket-fence erected , at the west entrance to the park be painted. . - . The president said the fence was donated by Cr.'Coley and such generosity should" be encouraged. He was sure Cr. Coley would appreciate the. society’s undertaking the work. The Borough Council also stated that it "was going to reconsider its policy in regard to the Park at its next meeting, and asked what the society was prepared' to do. After a lengthy discussion, it was to advise the. council that if it would agree to the original scheme laid down by Mr Black, the society would undertake the beautifying of the Park. It was considered that, .as the fence ’and gates were given the least the council could do was to paint them. BEAUTIFYING NORTH ENTRANCE TO TOWN. A letter was received from the Racing Club, intimating that it could not fence and clear the waste grohnd Adjoining the course near Park Street, but that it would lease the land at a pepper-corn rental to the society for such proposal. In the discussion whieh followed/ it was pointed out that the land was paft of a public reserve, vested in trustees who had the power of appointing their successors and that, the Racing Club could not lease the ground without the sanction of the trustees. The site at. present was waste land outside the course. It was decided that a deputation consisting of the president, Rev. F. McDonald and Messrs Hornblow, Admore and Rimmer wait upon the • Club and discuss the matter with • them. * IHAKARA GARDENS. Mr Hornblow brought up the quesV tion of completing the serpentine path at Ihakara Gardens. After some discussion it was decided that the president and secretary obtain estimates for the work and provided the cost did not exceed a certain limit, to carry out same. ; r FINANCE. / totalling £3l 8/11 were passed. It was decided to deposit the funds in the Post Office Savings Bank, the account to be opened and ' Operated on by the president and ; secretary. ■The purchase of seedlings was ? authorised. __ - A vote of sympathy was accorded to the president in "the serious illness of his father. The usual compliment to the chair terminated the meeting.
