SHOP DAY EFFORT. A combined meeting of Monton settlers and local townspeople was held in Pen can's rooms on Tuesdav night, presided over by Mr D. Christ'e, president of (be Retailers’ Association. The object of the meeting was to discuss ways and mean- ~f assisting the Moiiloa settlers : : !lie public hall effort. For many yV i - the Moutoa people have fell the need of a public hall in which to hold social fund ions. The school has been used for such purposes and has hoeti found far too iiiadot|iialc. A piece of land was given upan which lo erect the buildim- by Messrs W. E. Barlieyand R. Barln r. near the school house. A ball (-imniillce was formed and nionev raised by subscriptions and entertainments. The building i* now nearing completion hut there is still a certain amount required to liquidate liabilities. As the Moutoa people have whole-heartedly supported every local deserving object, il was felt that Fox ton should avail itself of the opportunity of assisting them in such a deserving case. The chairman briefly referred to the object of the meeting on the above lines. It was unanimously decided to make a local effort in the nature of a shop day on November 10th. Mestlames Pearson, Heaseman and Procter were appointed to take charge of the shop. Gifts and donations may be left at the C. M. Ross Co.’s and A. N. Smith’s business premises, prior to the shop day. Donations <>f live stock, including sheep, lamb, pigs, poultry, and dairy produce and fancy goods were promised and listed at the meeting. The objective aimed at by the effort is £SO.
