THE ROADWAYS OF NEW ZEALAND. Interesting statistics are now available regarding the mileage of roads in New Zealand. In the North Island there are 10,742 miles metalled and 11,339 miles unmetalled roads and 8,572 miles of tracks and unformed roads —a total of 30,653 miles. In the South Island there are 12,605 miles of metalled roads, 5657 miles of unmetalled roads, and 10,475 miles of tracks and unformed roads, a total of 28,757 miles. The average for the various highways groups in New Zealand is: Metalled roads. 1,297; unmetalled roads : 944; tracks and unformed roads, .1,059, a total of 3,297 miles.- The estimate number of cars was: North Island 7,496; South Island, 17,368; total 44,864.
