SCHOOL COMMITTEE’S LEGACY.

DEBTS OF PREDECESSORS. A FEW UNUSUAL TTEMS. A plea of assistance from the Oroua Dowiis School Committee was received by the Wanganui Education Board on Wednesday stating they, were faced with an account of £9 dating from 1918, although they had already paid £5 debts accumulated by their predecessors. They added: “Tt will be very'hard if we have to pay this.” Mr Birnie said it was a poor, struggling district, and if the Board could help them they should do so. The chairman: The old committee should have paid their debts. Mr Aitkon: A school committee is not liable for the debts of its predecessors. The chairman: I don’t think wc can make a grant. Mr Hemingway said it would be creating a precedent. The details of the account were read, .and it included axe handles, brooms, pencils, ropes, towels, mustard, kerosene, disinfectant, lollies, tea, candles, coffee and methylated spirits. The chairman said that, some of the items were unusual —41bs of butter on one day, and 10/6-worth of lollies. It was decided to refer the account back to the committee for further particulars.
