BAND BENEFIT CONCERT.
A SUCCESSFUL EFFORT. Tn order to assist ’the funds of tb local Citizens’ Band, the proprietors of the "Royal Pictures generously offered a benefit picture tetninrnent. Tn order to make thjP® l entertainment doubly attractive, Mr J. Colder, bandmaster, arranged a vocal and instrumental programme and the bill of fare presented on Tuesday night was full of merit and was keen ! v appreciated by the large audience which filled every part of the building. The Mayor (Mr J. Chrystall) officiated as chairman. Prior to the concert the band played a number of selections from the hall balcony. The concert opened with an orchestral selection “First Figure Valley of Ferns Wall/,” by an qrehestra of 17 performers, under the condnctorship of Air J. Holder, a well-balanced hpd tuneful interpretation. The orchestra gave the seeoifd figure of the same composition as an opening to tlie second half of thp programme. We hope to hear more from the orchestra on future occasions. The reception accord- . ed the musicians was a flattering appreciation of their efforts. Mr Tongs’ clever manipulation of a month organ and auto-harp from which lie extracted some popularairs, called forth a vociferous encore. Misses D. and H. Morgan's vocal duet “Hnwiian Smiles” was sung with nice expression and they had to respond to an undeniable recall. Miss D. Morgan was equally successful in her vocal “Little Mother of Aline,” as was Miss B. Chalk in tier very nice interpretation of the song Message from Home Sweet Home.” Air B. Chalk created a good impression in - the song: “Yoy Gave Your Heart.” This young man has a voice of remarkable sweetness and his items should he very acceptable : at future concerts. The. glee “Sweet and Low” was the gem item of the evening, the voices blending sweetly, those taking part were Misses M. and R, Dunn, D. and H. Alorgan, E. King, E. Evans, C. Griffin, F. Chalk, and Airs Carmont. Mr J. Holder’s comic item: “I've Brought the Coal” fairly brought down the house. Air Holder also contributed a humorous recitation. The quartette “Perfect Day” by Misses D. and H. Morgan and R. and AL Dunn was another star item. Air Homblow sang “The Road to Anywhere,” the audience taking up the refrain. The charming ballet “From Here to Shanghai” was as acceptable as the previous-—-performance and in its production a special word of prAise is due to, Mrs Hamer. _ Those taking part were: Misses D. and 11. Alorgan, Af. and R, Dunn, M, Patterson, R. Scadden, I. Patterson, N. Scadden, and F. Chalk. The young, ladies were charmingly costumed and the> blending of the voices was ' most harmonious. The second half of the programme consisted of tlie screening of the ’’naif Breed.” The accompaniments were played by .Misses Patterson, Fahey, Griffin and Evans. A special word of praise is due to Atiss Delqny, who officiated as pianist in the training of the"orchestra. The success of the entertainment is due to the enthusiasm of Air Golder ami his assistant, Air Aitohison, backed by the hearty co-operation of. the bandsmen and the effort should result in a substantial lift to'the funds, The Rand propose.- to organise another concert at an early date.
