ASSAULTS ON POLICE.
HEAVIER PENALTIES SUGGESTED. During the recent Parliamentary Mr V. 11. Puller (Roskill) ,i-ked | lie Minister of Ju.-tiee whether he would endeavour to have (he law so amended tlml much greater penalties would he inflicted on those who were responsible for assaulting police officers. Replying, the Hon. C. J. Parr (Minisier of Justice), said: “Section (IS of the Police Offences Act, 1908, provides that any person who assaults a constable in the execution of his duty may he arrested without warrant, and is liable to a tine of £2O or three months’ imprisonment. If the assault is of such a nature Hint the above penalty is considered inadequate, the prosecution may be taken under the Crimes Act, 1908, as follows: —Section 209 -—Assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty—two years’ hard labour; section 204 —assault causing actual bodily ham, three years’ hard labour; section 197 —with intent to do grievous bodily harm, or to resist the lawful arrest of any ('lie, does actual bodily harm, hard labour for life. The above provisions are sufficient to cover all cases of assault on the police.”
