NEWS AND NOTES.

“I was reading in a. magazine,” said His Honour, Mr .Ins tie e Frazer, at the Arbitration Court, at Auckland, recently, “that a five-roomed house, in sections and complete with all conveniences, can be supplied in America for 515 dollars, about £l3O. I just mentioned this for what it is worth. If it can be done in America it is time a house making factory was started here. Somebody will gel in and begin importing these houses, paying duty, etc., and erect them cheaper than they can be built here at present.” Plain talk was indulged in by the General Manager of Railways (Mr R. W. McVilly) in the course of an interview with members of the Railway Officers’ Institute. One of the matters discussed was a proposal that certain officers lie granted a HU allowance. “There is no use quoting any other department to me,” said Mr McVilly, “because if it is something I think you ought to get well then I will give it consideration on its merits. Tl I think you should not get it, you will be told straight ‘No.’ My advice to yon is: ‘Stand on your own feet.’ The altitude I take up in regard to tin 1 Railway Department is that it is not the smallest show in the country, and I want my men to stand on their own feet.”
