THE HEMP MARKET.

SEPTEMBER GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for the month of September for hemp, tow, and stripper slips have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: Hemp. —The total number of bales graded was 4,240, as compared with 4,709 bales for the corresponding month of last year, a decrease of 469 bales. For the twelve months ending 30th September, 1923, the number of bales graded was 59,882, as compared with 63,936 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 4,054 bales. Tow. —During the month 975 bales of tow were graded as compared with 1,232 for the same month last year, a decrease of 257 bales. For the twelve months ending 30th September, 1923, the number of bales graded was 15,314, as compared with 15,089 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 225 bales. Stripper Tow. —During t lie month 86 bales were graded against nil in 1922. Stripper Slips. —During the month there were 12 bales graded os compared with nil for the corresponding month last year. The following is the detailed particulars of the hemp graded: —

Four bales at Foxton, 44 at Wellington and four at Blenheim were rejected. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Good fair 683 (1374), high fair 2231 (2578), fair 1226 (577), common 48 (158), rejected 52 (22), a total of 4240 bales, being a decrease of 469 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 506, Foxton 1386, Wellington 1824, Blenheim 154, Bluff 134, Wig iron 236. The following is the detailed particulars of the tow graded :

Seven bales at Wellington and six at Blenheim were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: First grade 403 (756), 2nd grade 464 (406), 3rd grade 95 (56), condemned 13 (14), a total of 975 bales, being a decrease of 257 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 90, Foxton 305, Wellington 395, Blenheim 70, BlufF4s, Wairoa 70. Stripper Tow —Thirty-six bales at Wellington were graded Ist grade and 50 bales at Foxton 2nd grade. Stripper Slips. —Twelve bales at Auckland were graded 2nd grade.
