PALMERSTON RAILWAY DEVIATION.
THE prospect of the Palmerston N. railway deviation appears to he more remote than the more important national undertaking of linking up the Main Trunk line between Marton or Greatford and Levin. The Minister, when pressed to
make a statement on the Palmerston proposal refused to be drawn but added that be bad bis personal opinion on the matter. Tf that opinion had boon favourable there was mi need for reticence. Apart from that, if Ibc Palmerston deviation bad been considered seriously bv Cabinet, provision would have been made for a commencement of iho work in Iho Estimales, or contemplated works in Iho near f’niure. That something must he done to relieve the congestion at Palmerston North is generally admitted —but that “something” does not justify the tremendous expenditure of a deviation.
