MELBOURNE TRAGEDY.
TWO WOMEN SHOT DEAD. Mi lbourne, October 4. A mysterious double tragedy occurred in South Melbourne. A man named Edward Dougherty rushed lo a doctor’s room.- in an exciled state and reported Iha I his wife had shot another woman and then turned-the revolver on herself. Tin* police visited the house and found Mrs Dougherty and Mrs Lay shot dead. An automatic pistol with all the cartridges discharged, lay alongside. The police state that Dougherty was separated from his wife, who had sued him for maintenance. Mrs Lav rented the house, and three months ago Air- Dougherty and two children came 10-lodge with her. Dougherty called lo see -his wife, and an argument ensued during which Dougherty produced Ihe pistol. According to hi- statement the wife snatched it from him .and tired -cveral shots, one ol which struck AH's Lay, who m falling knocked Dougherty down. When he ro-e he saw hi- wile lying on the Hour. The room showed signs of a -draggle.
The police have detained Dough < rlv on a charge of carrying an tin licensed firearm,
