DEATH OF A MAORI CHIEFTAINESS.
The death took place- at TTokio, Levin, on Thursday, of Afrs Winiata Potnka, aged til years. The deceased was a chieftainess of high rank. On her mother’s side -lie was .descended from Iline-Po-rornngi, sister of the famous Te Wlmtnnui, paramount chief of the Ngnti ?Raukawa, and a relative of Te Rauparalia. The late Airs Winiata’s father was Albert Nicholson, who in the early days farmed the Wirokino run near Foxton.
The deceased lady was married at the age of sixteen to AViniala Potaka. and has resided at the Hokio continuously since her marriage. She is survived by ber husband and 14 children, amongst wiun.i are Alartin. Toliu and Tom Winiata, well-known in foot ball circles.
