TEACHERS’ APPOINTMENTS.
AND THE GRADING LIST. Wellington, Last - Night. - At the Education Conference the main conference considered the general question of the appointment of teachers with particular reference to the operation of the Dominion grade list. Representatives of the New Zealand Educational Institute addressed the Conference. After an exhaustive discussion of the system and the difficulties incidental, to it, the following resolutions were adopted : (1) That this conference approves of the principle of making appointments on the basis of a grading system. (2) The conference is of the opinion that the greater uniformity appraised is being steadily attained and urges the Department, still further to perfect the system in this respect, and approv.es of the decision of the Minister to discuss this subject with senior inspectors next week. (3) The conference does not favour giving discretion for five or even fewer marks, to appointing bodies, believing that less injustice would result from a strict adherence to tile grading list than would ocCUl' under the discretionary system.”
