FOXTON BOWLING CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. The annual general meeting of .members of the Foxton Bowling Club was held in the cloak-room of .the Town Hall last evening. The ' attendance was somewhat small, but nevertheless a very enthusiastic discussion took place on club matters and good business was done. The annual report, as published in our issue of Tuesday last, was taken as read, and the retiring president (Mr D. Christie) emphasised the important items contained therein, and detailed the various works that had been ‘undertaken during the closed season. The speaker ' made mention of the good work done by members of the Committee in this respect, and also one or two willing helpers outside the committee, finally paying a tribute to the gratuitous services rendered by Mr D. Whibley, both as green superintendent and in attending to the gardens and surroundings of the club’s property. The report was adopted. The balance-sheet was read and discussed, the President pointing out the improvement shown in the Club’s finances during the past year. Mr Barr, as auditor, referred in complimentary terms to the very satisfactory manner in which the retiring secretary, Mr R-. Roore, had accounts of the Society.
One item in the balance-sheet, that of locker rent, was remarked on as being very small, tlie amount shown being 10/-, and it was pointed out that there was apparently some misconception among those using lockers as to the terms on which they were taken. An annual rental of 2/6 -per locker is charged, and it was decided that this amount be collected in conjunction with the annual subscription.
The retiring president, Mr D. Christie, was unanimously re-elec-ted for a further term, Mr J. Ross declining nomination in favour of Mr Christie, and in doing so said that Mr Christie had proved himself a very enthusiastic and energetic president, and he considered the Club would JL>e well served by re-el-ecting Mr Christie for a further term.
Mr Huntley said it gave him much pleasure to second the motion, as he considered Mr Christie had shown just the right spirit and energy during the past year that had been required to promote life in the Club.
Mr Christie thanked members for re-electing him, and said he would endeavour to merit their confidence and make the Club even more successful than during the past year. The retiring secretary, Mr Roore, -did not seek re-election and Mr E. Huntley was elected unopposed to the vacancy. Mr Barr said he wished to propose Mr Roore as a vice-president of the Club in recognition of his three of four years of service. Mr Roore had been a very able secretary and an enthusiastic member, and he thought it fitting that such office should be conferred on him in recognition of his good work. Mr Huntley, in seconding the motion, said such a course would be a graceful tribute to Mr Roore, and as an ex-officio member of the committee his knowledge of Club affairs would be very valuable. Mr Roore said he was reluctant to resign his position as secretary, but pressure of duties compelled him to take this course. He thanked members for the appreciation they had expressed. The following vice-presidents were elected: —Messrs R. Roore, Barr, and J. Ross (re-elected).
The following committee was elected without ballot: —Messrs Admore, Smith, Nye and Downes. Mr D. Whibley was unanimously re-elected green superintendent. Delegates to Centre: —Messrs Admore and Nye (re-elected). Mr Roore was elected sole selector and handicapper. Correspondence was received from the Feilding Bowling Club, intimating that they would be opening their green on Saturday of next week and inviting one Foxton rink to be present. The President expressed the hope - that, although Saturday was an inconvenient day on which to get together a rink from the local club, an endeavour would be made to do so, as unless the local club visited neighbouring greens it could not be expected', that visits would be paid to Foxton. 1 The resignation of Mr L. R. Freedman, who; has left the district, was received wit| regret. \ Y ~ The '"question of inaugurating schemes for assisting the Club’s finances ;was ,discussed qnd proposals" brought .down .for the direction of the Committee. " j / v It was. reported that Mr J, Chry- - ‘stall, one" of’ 'th'edebehture" holders of the Club had generously handed in his debenture, and it was resolved that Mr Chrystallbe thanked for his, action. The following new members were elected: —Messrs T. W. Winstanley, H. F. Preston, Simpson, E. B. Stohr, ? -W. C; Bradley, and Perreau. Mr Barr mqved, seconded by Mi 1 Christie, that a letter be forwarded to Mr D.- Whibley, expressing the Club’s appreciation of his, services on the Club’s behalf and wishing him a speedy recovery from his present indisposition. The President referred to the generous publicity given to club matters during the year by the Press, and on his motion, seconded by Mr Barey a vote of thanks was accorded the Press. Mr Admore reported on the business transacted at the recent Centre meeting. The matter of a methodical over-
sight of the Club trophies was brought. up, and it was resolved that Mr Admore be appointed trophy custodian, that all trophies be handed to him prior to opening day, and that it be his duty to receive and arrange challenges for same. Mr Huntley said he considered that the Club was somewhat overburdened with challenge trophies and he moved that the Stevenson Pennants and Bolder Cup be offered for competition, to be won outright, subject to the consent of the donors, and that conditions for competition be arranged by the Committee. This was seconded by Mr Pearson, and carried. Members -were urged to pay their subscriptions promptly, in order to keep the interest on overdraft to a minimum.
