GOATS RUE.
SEED DISTRIBUTED WITH ROAD METAL. A letter was received at the meeting of the Kairanga County Council on Tuesday from the Department of Agriculture, drawing the Council s.attention to the fact that goats rue which was a noxious weed, was spreading rapidly in many parts of ttie luahawatu plains and adjoining J. aus and was most difficult to eradicate when once established.;. Complaint was made that it spread along the road lines through the medium of shingle for mailing purposes taKen from the . bed of the Manawutu river. It seemed that the shells were spread through the Use of this shingle, outbreaks having been reported as having occurred in the Mauawatu district and settlors complained bitterly at being compelled to clear these weeds wnere me infestation was caused by ihe action of the County Council concerned in spreading contaminated shingle. The Department suggested. Glut the Council should exercise its powers under the Counties Act and instruct its road surfacemen to eradicate the weed wherever it showed up. The Chairman remarked that the Council was taking precautionary measures.
