FOXTON BOWLING CLUB.
ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report to he submitted to members at the annual meeting to be held on Friday evening, at 7 o’clock in the Town Hall is as follows: “In addition to top-dressing both the green and the croquet lawn, Wednesday working-bees have dismantled the tank-stand, excavated the bank between the two lawns to the width of 6ft. in order to give croquet players a larger area and opened the trench for laying sewerage pipes. With the exception of a man for three days, the work has been carried out by your committee. Special mention is made of other members who assisted to complete these works. “The season opened with a bank overdraft of £l4B 14/6 and outstanding accounts of £l6 1/6, total £164 16/-, and closed on August 31, 1923, with a bank overdraft at £llß 19/4 with accounts passed for payment to the extent of £24 8/11, total, £143 8/3. On this showing we stand in a better financial position to-day by £2l 8/9. With the exception of one sub. of £2 2/- all of last year’s subs, have been paid. “The opening day as in the past, was a highly successful function — visitors attending from many of the sister clubs. Visits paid to other clubs were more numerous than usual and your committee recommend that these pleasant outings be continued. The triangular shield again created keen interest among the three clubs and although we were not successful in winning the coveted trophy we put up a good fight after experiencing a set_back in the initial round. The Wilford cup for which big entries were received again provided keen competition and was won by Mr A. N. Smith, a comparatively young but very keen and enthusiastic member. As usual the Nye Ferns were keenly contested and were challenged for every offWednesday during the season: The club is badly in need of Saturday players and an endeavour should be made to secui’e, say 12 new members, as the green on that day is very often idle. It is suggested that the two club trophies at present lying dormant should be competed for by Saturday players. Rinks from the club challenged for the Dixon and Manson and Barr cups but in neither case were they successful. Your club was represented by one rink at the Wanganui tournament at Christmas, and although unsuccessful had a very enjoyable time. During the past season the borough water has been installed on the green and the sewerage pipes laid from the main to a point opposite the pavilion —a distance of about 140 ft. Pairs competitions were held on several occasions during the season in which neighbouring clubs were invited to participate, these proved highly enjoyable and produced some keen games. The club’s caretaker out his duties faithfully and your committee recommend his re-appointment. The roller at present used by the club has been found to be very unsatisfactory and a new concrete roller has been ordered from Masterton. The delegates to the centre, Messrs Nye and Admore, carried out their duties faithfully and will furnish their report at the annual meeting. Next season the work should be comparatively light and the following requirements are suggested: The completion of the sewerage system for which we have in hand a surplus plant to be disposed of and valued at £l3, this amount should go a long way toward paying for the completion of this work; (2) 20ft. of pavilion-extension towards Russell St. (3) the demolition of the rustic-house from which the material can be used for erecting a rustic fence within the club’s property. 'lt is suggested that croquet members be granted the use of one or more rinks on which they may participate in the game of bowls. The new afternoon tea scheme worked most satisfactorily and your committee recommend its continuance. The thanks of the club are due to the ladies for their untiring efforts in dispensing afternoon tea, to Mr Wbibley for his care and attention to the flower beds and banks and to Mr Barr, as honorary auditor and to the committee and members for excellent services rendered during the season. Your committee would impress upon members the advisability of paying their subs at the annual meeting. By doing so the club would save many pounds in interest, postage and stationery besides a lot of clerical work and worry to the President. The borough rating on the club’s property is now much higher than formerly and your committee recommend that a request be made to the Council for a reduction. The membership at present consists of 36 active and 9 honorary while the croquet club membership is 21 active and two honorary. In conclusion we wish to thank one and all who, in any way, assisted with the work during the year and trust the coming season will be a highly successful and enjoyable one.”
A copy of the balance-sheet will appear in Thursday’s issue.
