TAWA FLAT DEVIATION.
THE Hon. Dr. Newman, writing- of a survey of routes at Tawa Elat, suggested to him by some country people and authorised !>v Sir William Eraser, says: “The engineers reported that, from a point some half-mile beyond Ngahauraugn, by means of a tunnel some 00 to 70 chains long, a new good level route could Do obtained to Tawa Elat. When this route is made there will be a level road for the trains from this city to TTimmerton —a great savin# in tlie heavy costs of the
Joluisonville route. The grade in (lie lu.uiiel would he 1 in 100 —a practically level route. Tn Mr Seddon’s lime il was proposed to avoid (he .heavy haul from i’aekakariki lo Bukerim hy running the train a I sea level from Paekakariki lo Plimmerton.” This would effect a very considerable saving in Hie running costs of trains between Wellington and Paekakariki, and so secure a fairly level route up (he line. The inauguration of the Town Flat deviation works is, therefore, of no little interest to (he Manawalu people as, with its construction, it should lie possible for the trains to make Dot ter running time between Wellington and this district.
