Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, SEPTEMB. 6, 1923. RIVER BOARD'S SCHEME.
THE Manawatu-Oroua River Board’s scheme to drain and safeguard against flood waters some 70,000 acres of the most fertile land in the Dominion is fraught with great possibilities not only to Poxton and adjacent towns but to the local port. The immunity from flood water of such a large area of rich land, suitable for intense cultivation, should not only increase population but add considerably to the productivity and wealth of the whole district. The Harbour Board is vitally interested in the scheme, as it may be necessary to remove the wharf from its present position to a point lower down the river at the junction of one of the cuts or even to the Heads. This, of course, is only a possibility and will receive the consideration of. experts. .It has been stated that the diversion of part of the water through the first cut about a mile and a-half a-> hove the wharf, will not prevent the present navigation to the wharf, although it is reasonable to suppose that the flow will be decreased. To cut oil the flow between the cut and wharf would seriously interfere with the borough sewerage outlet and the water supply to the (laxmills on the river side. However, all the points will be carefully gone into before the scheme is finally adopted.
