ALLEGED THEFT OF GOLD.
DREDGE MASTER CHARGED,
Dunedin, Last Night, In the Police Court to-day, Samuel James Howijohns was charged with the theft of 195 ounces of gold valued, at £789, the property of Samuel J. Luke and others.
The evidence of a large number of witnesses was that the gold was similar in appearance and quality to gold obtained by the Cardrona dredge on the Clutha Rivei', of which accused was dredge master for a year. This company went into liquidation some years ago when the returns fell off. One witness was the gold officer at the Bank of New Zealand, who had assayed the Cardona gold. He stated .that the sample submitted by the police assayed closer to the Cardona assay than any of the bank records. The evidence further showed that the accused admitted selling the gold, and stated that he had had it in his possession eight years, but would not say where he obtained it. He reserved his defence, and was committed for trial on bail fixed at £SOO.
