UNPROVOKED ASSAULT.

CLERGYMAN STRUCK ON FACE. Auckland, August 31. In the Police Court, Thomas George Vincent was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment for what the Magistrate declared was an unprovoked assault on the Rev. G. W. Smailes, an Anglican clergyman. Vincent accosted Mr Smailes at St. Helier’s Bay, and accused him of having made an insulting remark, which lie heard, Smailes being the only person within a hundred yards. Accused struck Mr Smailes a severe blow on the right cheek, and another blow on the left side of his face, breaking his teeth. Complainant said that defendant had accused him of getting him sacked from St. Sepulchre’s Church which complainant denied.

The daughter of a certain strictprincipaled old deacon had attended a dance the previous night, much against her father’s wishes. When she appeared for breakfast the next morning, he greeted her with the words: “Good morning, daughter of Satan,” To which the maidr en respectfully replied: “Good morning, father,”
