LAND AND INCOME TAX.
BILL PASSES UPPER HOUSE,
The Land and Income Tax Bill was put through all stages in the Legislative Council on Thursday and passed. Sir Francis Bell said the only interesting idause in the Bill was that, relieving the landowner from payment of income tax. The landowner would pay the land tax and be relieved of income tax. The Act had been a perfect: nuisance to landholders, because of the necessity of keeping returns. Tlie lion. 10. Newman congratulated the Government on removing an injustice. When the tax was made the farmers realised that money bad to be found and they found it, but a 1 the same time they considered they bad a grievance in being called on to pay double taxation. He I bought this would benelit the working classes, as any reduction such as this which farmers got generally was spent in improvements and on labour. It was a satisfaction to know an injustice was about to cease.
