THE SHANNON BRIDGE.
ENGINEERS IN CONFERENCE.
A conference of engineers was held at Shannon on Wednesday to consider Ihe best means of safeguarding the bridge over the Manawnlu River giving access to Moutoa and Eoxton. The safety of the bridge is being threatened by erosion in I lie river, and as it is an important crossing, (he settlers are consider-
ably perturbed at the risk. Both they and a large number of the travelling public would suffer considerable loss and inconvenience should any Mood wash tl.e bridge out. Some time ago the local bodies interested (Horowhenua County Council, Manawatu County Council, Shannon Borough Council, Makerua Drainage Board, ami Ma-nawatu-Onmn River Board) held a conference at which Mr E. W. Furkert (engineer in chief of the Public Works Department) was present. At this conference it was decided !o obtain a combined report from the Public Works Department, and local body engineers as to the best way to relieve the district of the menace threatened by the destruction of the bridge. The engineers, including Mi* Furkert, on Wednesday, after inspecting the site, returned to the Shannon borough offices and from (lie survey plans before them, investigated all possible means of relieving the danger. It is understood that a unanimous decision as to the best solution of the difficulty was
arrived at, and this, with alternative proposals is to he embodied in a report to the local bodies convening tlie conference, who are expected to meet at ail early date to consider the report.
