While searching on Riverton beach (Otago) a young man found about £3OO worth of ambergris, which was in good condition and quickly found a buyer. The Government lias agreed to provide free carriage for fodder for stock in the snow-bound areas in Southland. It will also provide free carriage of stock on the return journey to enable the animals to be taken to pasture on the low-lying areas. It is understood that the same railway facilities will be granted to the farmers in the snowbound areas in Otago. The Mayor of Grimsby (England) believes in carrying out his various municipal duties in fitting fashion. According to the Daily Sketch, lie opened the local baths in a novel manner. Intend of wearing official dress and making the usual speech he appeared in bathing costume, accompanied by liis wife, and the pair swam a two lengths’ race. The Mayoress won. “It seemed to me the only proper way to open the baths,” said the Mayor. “We have both been swmming-elub members for years.”
