VALEDICTORY.

A very pleasant social evening and farewell was tendered Constable and Airs O’Donoghue by the Foxton Association Football Club at their social hall, Park Street, last evening. Constable O’Donoghue has been promoted to the charge of th Police Station at Kaponga and the Foxton public generally regret the departure of Air and Airs O’Donoghue, as during their past eight years’ residence here they have made many friends and their sterling qualities have been evident. The social hall was attractively decorated with blue and white streamers, the Club’s colours, together with greenery and the evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with vocal items. Alusie was supplied by Air Tom East. At a suitable juncture, Air Perreau, J.P., speaking on behalf of the local Justices of the Peace, made eugolistie reference to the good qualities of Constable O’Donoghue, remarking on his great willingness at all times to assisl the Justices in (he course of their duties, giving advise when necessary and always carrying out bis duties in a straightforward manner. The speaker said he had great pleasure in handing to Constable O’Donoghue, on behalf of the Justices of Foxton, a present in the form of a Gillette safety razor contained in a handsome silverplated ease. Mr D. AY. Robertson, J.P., also spoke of the Constable’s good qualities and joined with the otliex - Justices in wishing him success in his

promotion. Constable O’Donoghue, in reply, said lie was taken somewhat by surprise, as he was under the impression that he was merely present as a guest, hut did not anticipate being made the recipient of such a gift. However, be could assure the donors that lie would always treasure their present which would serve to remind him at all times of the friends he had left in Foxton. Later in the evening Air A. N. Smith, president of the Association Football Club, intimated that he had a very pleasant duty to perform, in the nature of making a presentation to both Constable and Mrs O’Donoghue. on behalf of the Soccer Club and others. In handing Mi* O’Donoghue a travelling

mg, the speaker said it gave him great pleasure to he present to do honour to the departing guest, and to have the opportunity of expressing the good wishes of members of the Club and the general public. Constable O’Donoghue was held in high esteem both in his official and private capacity and while they greatly regretted his departure, they wished him every success in Ins promotion. To Airs O’Donoghue Mr Smith handed two sachets containing handkerchief's and a large bottle of pei’fume, suitably eulogising the good qualities of the recipient. Messrs Winstanley, Robertson and Jack also expressed good wishes towards the departing guests. Constable O’Donogliue suitably acknowledged the gifts on behalf of Airs O’Donoghue and himself. The following contributed songs: Alisses Chalk, H. and D. Alorgan, Alessrs T. East, T. Carter, and Hinds, and Messrs Carter and Hinds duet.

Alessrs Ogilvy, Pearson Jewell, and Smith were present as representatives of the Racing Club and the business section of the community were well represented. The gathering closed with the singing of “They are Jolly Good Fellows,” and expressions of good wishes for the guests. Constable O’Donoghue and family expect to take their departure from Foxton some time this week, and will carry away with them the good wishes of the people of Foxton.
