NEWS AND NOTES.

About 30 members of the Tara run Tramping Club, under the leadership of Air Fyfe. journeyed to Pnkorua at the end of last week and had some training in rock climbing on the Wai rock. This rock, according to Maori legend, is supposed. to be a lady who, having deserted her husband, was found with her lover in the cave almost opposite by her husband, and he having powers unknown to modern people, converted his erring spouse into a rock, only some centuries later to be clambered over in the most intimate fashion bv modern folk.

The effect of sickness amongst the workers of the Dominion is dealt with in the annual report of the Labour Department, which states that it is reasonable to assume that an average of considerably over six days per annum is lost through sickness by each worker employed in factories. The number of workers in factories in the Dominion during the year was 92,608. Thus through sickness, which may be largely preventable, there is incurred a loss of production equivalent to 555,648 days or equivalent to a full year’s absence from work by 2,020 workers every year. It is proposed to institute a special inquiry into the causes of the absence of workers. A Government paper gives the (piestions put to London policemen in recent examinations for first and second-class certilieates, some of which might puzzle many professors. The following are examples: Wjliat is leap year? Why do we have leap years? What is the best treatment for an ingrowing toenail"? What are the principal duties of the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the House of Commons, and the Lord Mayor of London? Suppose you wished to explain to a child the working of a flash electric sign, such as is commonly used for advertising, how would you proceed? How would you proceed if you wished to cut down a large tree in your garden ?
