Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JULY 26, 1923. EASTON PARK.
IN the absence of two Councillors — and on his own casting vote —the Mayor at Tuesday night’s special meeting of the Borough Council carried a resolution that a public meeting should be called to settle a policy in connection with Easton Park. As previously pointed out, the park was the gift of Mr A. S. Easton to the citizens of Foxton and was vested in the Borough Council as the controlling authority. The donor, in a letter to the Council, stated inter alia: “I gave the ground to the people of Foxton and not to any single body or club and I would like to see it made a beauty spot where any or the whole of the people (especially women and children) can enjoy themselves. The first proposal, which was embodied in a plan drawn by Mr Black, had my approval.” The original plan was abandoned owing to differences of opinion as to the area being used as a football field. As the controlling authority, it is the Council’s duty to formulate a policy and the calling of a public meeting to deal with this matter is to proclaim that the Council is incapable of discharging a simple matter of administration. Had the full Council been present the Mayor’s resolution would not have been carried. In view of the ill-feeling which has already been evinced the calling of a public meeting will only resurrect it.
