CHILD BEATING.

THE RECENT CASE. QUESTION ASKED IN PARLIAMENT. ' Reference to the recent childflogging case was made in the House of Representatives by Mr V. H. Potter (Roskill) yesterday afternoon. Mr Potter asked the Minister for Justice what mitigating circumstances there were in the case and remarked that though it was proved that the child had been beaten and held under cold water, the sentence on the father was six weeks’ imprisonment. The Minister, Mr PaiT, replied that he had read the newspaper reports, but. was not otherwise acquainted with the facts. He was quite unable to interfere with the sentence of the magistrate, but would he glad to direct the Infant Welfare Department to inquire into the ease and take steps to protect the child.
