COUNTRY RACING CLUBS.

CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON

The annual conference of Country racing clubs was held at Wellington on Tuesday evening. The local representatives were Messrs W. T. Jewell and W. E. Barber. The report and balance-sheet were submitted and adopted. The headquarters of the association were fixed in Wellington and it was resolved that a secretary should lie appointed, the salary and appointment to he left to the incoming executive.

Tt was decided that the delegates present should form a deputation to the Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs, to lay the claims of country clubs before the Government, the speakers to he Messrs Bruce, Evans and Stewart. Consideration was given to an amendment to the Gaming Act sought by the association, giving extra totalisator permits, particularly to one-day clubs and new clubs desirous of instituting racing in their districts. Fifty extra permits are asked for.

The election of officers resulted: President, Mr W. Jewell (Foxton); vice-president, Mr D. J. Evans (Westland); executive, Messrs J. Kennedy (Geraldine) and J. Finney (Nelson), representing the South Island and the Hon. E. W. Alison (Taknpuna) and Mr Albert Bruce (Thames), representing the North Island.

The following motion was passed: “The Country Racing Clubs’ Association emphatically protests against the action of the Racing Conference imposing penalties and conditions on persons who have been granted permission under the Gaming Asi regulations to enter upon race courses during race meetings; that the conditions attached to the permits are in direct conflict with the spirit and intention of the regulations, and this association respectfully suggests to the Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs the necessity of adding to the regulations the right of appeal to the said Minister by dissatisfied persons.” • A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Bruce who did not seek nomination this year for the office of president.
