FOOTBALL INCIDENT AT ELTHAM.
Eltham, July 2, The Senior Rugby competition match on Saturday between Eltham and Waimate terminated dramatically shortly before time, when the latter team walked off the field disputing the referee’s decision in awarding Eltham a goal which was not signalled by the line umpires. Scores were: Waimate 11, Eltham 6 when L. Head drop-kicked a penalty goal, giving Eltham a further 3 points. The goal apparently was a poster, and not indicated by the linesmen, but was awarded by the referee. Waimate protested against the decision, but failing to obtain satisfaction, decided to withdraw from the field, and hooted the referee, Mr Thompson, (Stratford). The incident caused considerable feeling among spectators and players.
