SECTARIANISM IN POLITICS.

A recurrence last night in the House of Representatives of the reference to the effect of sectarianism on the elections drew a warm rejoinder from the Minister of Mines and Labour, who asserted that the Refonn Party was not associated with it. During the course of his speech in the no-confidence debate, the member for Nelson (Mr H. Afmore, Liberal-Labour) ref-vred to sectarianism :>> politic-'- He -tated the Rev. Howard Elk- tt, secretary of the Protestant Political Association, had spoken on behalf of the Reform Party in the Taranaki and Wairarapa electorates. The Minister of Mines and Labour (Hon. Ci. Anderson) said Air Atmore had said but for sectarianism the present member for 1 auranga would not have heeen elected, and that had it not been for sectarianism Sir Joseph Ward would have been elected. Mr Atnmre: I did not say it. The Minister: “You inferred it. You also inferred that Sir Joseph Ward was defeated because of sectarianism. Both statements are utterly incorrect. I would use a stronger term, hut that I know you Mr Speaker, would call me to order, lam a Southlander, and I knew the facts, and I said so at the time. The hon. member said that the Rev. Howard Elliott had during the Coalition Government bee a organising in the interests of (lii:- party. That statement is quite contrary to fact. This party has newer had anything to do with Mr Howard Elliott. (Cries of “Oh!” from Opposition members.) When the hon. gentleman says that Mr Elliott and his association—l suppose he means the Protestant Po•al Association —published the names of members who were to be supported, I know that, in any case, I did not know about it until the advertisement appeared in the papers. Opposition members: Did you refute it. The Minister: No: what can a man do when a man outside his party puts his name up? I don’t approve of clerical or sectarian influence in election. I condemn it. What led up to this position? The member knows that a federation was established —recently established in my opinion to the detriment of the people who established it- M heie you have one set of bigots set ting up a sectarian association, you will have another set of bigots setting up another. This party has nothing to do with either of them.
