Last Sunday was the 80th anniversary of the Wairau massacre. This event was the outcome of an affray that’ took place between a band of Maoris led by Te Kauparaha and his son-in-law, Te Eangihaeata, and a European party from Nelson, under Captain Arthur Wakefield, agent for the New Zealand Company. The party, which consisted of about 50 men, had gone from Nelson to the Wairau to arrest the two chiefs on a charge of burning the hut of the surveyors who were engaged in surveying some land concerning the ownership of which there was a disagreement. A fight ensued, several of Captain Wakefield’s m'en being killed. The others surrendered, but nearly half of them were massacred at the command of Te Rangihaeata, whose wife had been killed by a stray bullet. Captain Wakefield was among those who lost their lives.
