NEWS AND NOTES.

The Maori residents of Galatea, on the Wanganui River, have recently completed a school entirely on their own resources (states the Wanganui Herald). They prepared the plans and found all the labour for the job. A large portion of the timber used came from one of Ihe old llour mills erected by Kawana (Governor) Sir George Grey 5o years ago. The building is a credit to all concerned.

A remarkable invention worked by “the rise and fall of the swell of the sea" is claimed by Joseph Harvey Cornish, who was before the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North on Wednesday on three charges of misrepresentation arising out of his disposal of shares for the patent, evidence was given by th@. police and three investors concerned that the accused had represented to residents at Shannon that the Government had offered him 17,00 P and on another occasion £5,00(1 for the invention, which he had declined, believing that there was more money in it. Shares at £5 he alleged, would bring in a return beyond computation. He stated that he intended to demonstrate the invention at the Otaki or T’oxton beaches. In a statement to the police, accused declared that during the past three months lie had collected £l5O from intending shareholders, hut this had been utilised to pay buck debts und maintain his wife and family at Koxtou. It was expressly stated in legally prepared agreements signed by shareholders that should the venture prove a failure this money was not to be returned. He was released on bail of £15(1 and two similar sureties till Tuesday.
