TRAGEDY AT COLDSTREAM.
YOUTH CONFESSES TO KILLING OLD MAN. FOUND SHOT THROUGH THE CHEST. Ashburton, Last Night. Albert Frederick Maxwell Kissel, age/d 18 years, a ploughman, employed by Mr David Little, near Coldstream, 25 miles south of Ash r burfon, was arrested this afternoon charged with the murder of James Henry Suring McKenzie, aged 65 years, caretaker at the homestead of Mr John Studlioluie, on the Goldstream Estate, by a rifle shot. Kissel belongs to Loburn, North Canterbury, and is a well-built lad. Deceased is believed to have come from Lyttelton, and worked for some time on Quail Island. Particulars to hand are to the effect that Kissel went to work as usual this morning, and after working for some hours, mentioned to lii.s employer lliat he had shot McKenzie on the previous night. A visit to the homestead found McKenzie lying dead on the floor in his pyjamas with a shot through liis chest from a .44 bore sporting rifle. Kissel said he did not know why lie shot him. It is understood they had been friendly, Kissel frequently spending evenings with McKenzie after their work. The police believe Kissel suffered from delusions. The body was brought to the morgue, and arrangements made fUr a post mortem examination. Accused will come before the Court to-morrow, when a remand for eight days will lie asked for to enable accused to be kept under observation.
