MAY GRADING RETURNS

The grading returns for liemp, tow and stripper-slips, were issued by t:lie Department of Agriculture, for the month of May as follows: —

Hemp. —The total number of bnl- 1 cs graded was 4,002 ns compared ] w ith 3,904 for the corresponding 1 month of last year, an increase of 998 bales. For the 12 months ending 31st May, 1923, the number of bales graded was 59,101 as compared with 59,004 for the previous 12 months, a decrease of 443 bales. Tow. —During the month 1,159 bales of tow were graded ns compared with 900 for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of 259 bales. For the 12 months ending 31st May, 1923. (lie number of bales graded was 15,041 as compared with 13,114, for the previous 12 months, an increase of 2,527 j hales. Stripper-Slips; —During the month there were 19 bales of stripperslips graded as compared with nil I for the same month last year, an increase of 19 hales. The following is the detailed particulars of the hemp graded :

Thirteen hales at Pieion were graded fine. Twenty-three bales at Auckland, 28 at Foxton, and 33 al Wellington were rejected. The following shows Hie number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: Fine 13 (40), good fair 881 (870), high fair 2,703' (2,202), low fair 958 (547), common 203 (108), rejected 84 (65), condemned nil (6), a total of 4,902 bales, being an increase of 998 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: Auckland 1,476, Foxton 1,130, Wellington 1,813, Blenheim 111, Pieion 31, Wairoa 80, Bluff 249. The following is the detailed particulars of the tow graded: —

Fifty-three bales at Auckland and J four at Wellington were condemned, j The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: Ist grade 380 (395). 2nd grade 041 (437), 3rd grade 57 (4), a total of 1,159 bales, being an increase of 259 hales. The number of hales graded at, loach port was as follows: Auckland 364, Foxton 321. Wellington 370, Blenheim 32, Pieton 15, Wairoa 14, Bluff 43. Stripper-Slips : —Nineteen hales at Auckland were graded 2nd grade.
