PEARLS FROM FISH SCALES.

A project to make artificial pearls out oi‘ lish scales is being promoted by a group of Americans who are visiting Scottish ports in search of factory accommodation. They plan to use the scales of herring. The scales will be chemically treated and compressed under the new process and shipped in airtight cases to America. The material thus obtained will be called “chiltin.” The promoters say that by their secret process they can make out of this artificial pearls with the velvety feeling and lustre of real pearls.
