AWARDED WIDOW OF RAILWAY ACCIDENT VICTIM. 'Wellington, June 4. Maud Barbara Canning, of Wellington, was successful in her petition for damages in connection with the death of her husband, John Edward Canning at the Porirua railway crossing in October of last year. The jury awarded her £I,OOO damages, to he divided between herself and her two children. The deceased was driving a motor lorry and collided with the north bound Wellington-Aucklaml express. The sum claimed was £2,000. The jury considered that the train was travelling at an excessive speed, that the whistling was satisfactory, that a warning boll should be installed at the crossing, and that. Canning exercised reasonable care when approaching the crossing. On behalf of the petitioner, Mr Kennedy moved for judgment in favour of the suppliant on the jury’s findings and this motion and a cross motion by the Crown for judgment or for a nonsuit were adjourned for further consideration by Mr Justice Snlmond.
